We are pleased to offer a printed copy of Sanna & Co.'s Kuusikko shawl pattern.
Kuusikko is Finnish, and it means a grouping of spruce trees.

The cables represent the diagonal lines of branches and needles, and the bobbles mimic pinecones. Knits, purls and eyelets help define the shapes.

The ribbed bottom and wide stripes at the top part balance out the rich texture of the middle panel, while maintaining the rhythm of the vertical lines running through the shawl.


The tassels articulate all three corners to give the shawl the finishing touch.

NEEDLES

  • 120cm, or longer, circular needle.
  • Sport weight shawl: 4mm / US 6 or size required to get gauge.
  • Fingering weight shawl: 3.75mm / US 5 or size required to get gauge.

NOTIONS

  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle.
  • For making tassels: Cardstock, pen, scissors.

YARN

  • Sport weight shawl: 1295m of sport weight yarn.
  • Fingering weight shawl: 1400m of fingering weight yarn.

Of our yarn bases we would suggest our Lexington Woolies Cormo Fingering/Sport for a sport weight version of Kuusikko, or our Meringo Fingering base for a fingering weight version.  More information on our yarn bases can be found here.

GAUGE

  • Sport weight shawl: With 4mm / US6 needle in Wide Stripes Pattern. Measured after blocking from a relaxed fabric: 20 sts and 28 rows = 10 cm / 4”.
  • Fingering weight shawl: With 3.75mm / US5 needle in Wide Stripes Pattern. Measured after blocking from a relaxed fabric: 23 sts and 31 rows = 10cm / 4".

PROCESS

This shawl is knit flat and in one piece, beginning at the widest point, and regularly decreasing along one edge to create the triangle shape.

The knitting kicks off with a soothing k2, p2 ribbing for the widest part of the work.

Then texture slowly takes over with richness and complexity and then seamlessly
eases back into a relaxed wide stripe pattern to breeze through to the pointy end.

This pattern includes charted instructions for the textured panel of cables and bobbles

and written instructions for the ribbing and wide stripes.
