Tips for working with Hand Dyed Yarns
  • The beauty and nature of hand dyed yarn is that every skein is unique and individual. Even within the same dye batch variations between skeins can occur.
  • We therefore recommend alternating skeins within your projects to ensure an optimal finish and colour blending.
  • Please also ensure you buy enough yarn for your project at the time of purchase, as colours can vary between dye batches.
  • Our yarns come twisted in a skein and will need to be wound into a cake before use. You can do that yourself or have it done by us using our Cake Your Yarn service.
Care Instructions

Hand wash only as this is a non-superwash yarn base.

  • Our hand dyed yarns have been washed to remove excess dye, however some residual dye may remain, particularly in dark and saturated colourways.
  • It is recommended to gently hand wash your hand dyed projects in cold water.
  • Wool wash or a mild detergent may be used.
  • We recommend blocking and drying garments flat in the shade and not tumble drying.

Louie & Lola Yarns Merino Possum Fingering - Tonals Collection - Stone

Why you'll love Merino Possum DK

This yarn has a cult following for very good reason!

Combining next level softness, warmth and lightness, our Merino Possum DK is a truly luxurious base that is unlike any other and perfect for next-to-skin wear for mid-weight garments.

It works well especially well in stranded colourwork and textured projects, such as sweaters and accessories.

It's rich heathered, undyed oatmeal colour lends a depth and complexity to the 30 colourways we dye on it, whilst the possum fur adds a soft grey-brown halo and soft drape to the yarn.

Spun by Wild Earth Yarns in Christchurch, New Zealand as a blend of 80% non-superwash Merino and 20% NZ Possum fur, the yarn's woollen spun construction further enhances the lightness of the yarn.

On the softness scale, we would describe possum as even silkier and more luxurious than cashmere, but more breathable.

The yarn works well at a variety of gauges from 18-22 stitches, due to the halo from the possum fur 'filling in' the gaps between the stitches.

A sustainable fibre with superhero properties

The Brushtail possum is considered the third warmest fibre in the world, after the polar bear and arctic fox.

It's hollow core is remarkably effective at trapping heat, making it 55% warmer and 35% lighter than a 100% wool yarn.

Microscopic sized scales (in comparison to wool fibres), means there is reduced friction within the possum fibre, making it highly resistant to pilling.

Possum fur also draws moisture away from the body and expels exterior water, making it extremely breathable.

The Brushtail possum was introduced to New Zealand in 1837, quickly becoming a major threat to the country's forests and wildlife, with the possum having no natural predators.

As a result, possum population control measures were introduced by the NZ Government in an effort to protect the country's forests and native wildlife.

Possum fur harvesting is a by-product of the eradication program and plays an important part in the conservation of New Zealand's ecosystems.
